The song was a success on its initial release and was certified Gold by the RIAA on August 18, 1971, and Platinum on April 10, 2017. It has continued to sell, with over 1.6 million digital copies sold in the United States. The next morning I drove up to Harper’s Ferry and followed Chestnut Hill Road and Mission Road along the Ridge and river toward West Virginia’s Shannondale Springs Wildlife Management Area, one of my favorite birding spots in the region. I took two wrong turns in the woods, and I drove through old villages melting back into nature. Honestly, I thought, you could drive this road, perhaps at dusk or night, and be in the song. Ultimately, as Denver said many times, this song is more about a feeling than an actual place. “Take Me Home, Country Roads” has remained iconic for 50 years not because it inaccurately describes only a few neighbors just to our west, but because it describes that feeling we all get longing for the place we call home. This tiny stretch of West Virginia was, like the Virginia side of the Ridge, well known for its high-carbon charcoal—made from the trees of the Ridge—which was often used in the iron mills in the area.
Released as an iTunes-only single on July 4, 2018, the song reached No. 1 on the iTunes singles chart. It debuted at No. 41 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart that week and at No. 21 on Billboard's Country Digital Songs the following week. The official YouTube upload of the original John Denver recording, initially uploaded in 2013, would later edit its description in response to the song's use for the game. We chose the Bacon Balls , mashed potatoes with bacon and cheese, breaded and deep fried; a rich, creamy treat to set the tone. Dutch pop band Hermes House Band covered the song and released it as "Country Roads".
The Cellar Door’s slogan was “The Smallest Room With the Biggest Names” and it was D.C.’s equivalent to the Troubadour in LA, the Bitter End in New York City and the Hungry Eye in San Francisco.
